Effectiveness of acupuncture in migraine headache

Abstract

Introduction: migraine headache occupies the seventh cause of disability worldwide, constituting a health problem that requires an adequate diagnosis and treatment.

Objective: to assess the effectiveness of acupuncture in patients with migraine headaches treated in the neurology consultation at the Aracelio Rodríguez Castellón polyclinic in the Cumanayagua municipality.

Method: an experimental, quasi-experimental investigation was carried out. The universe consisted of 40 patients assisted at the neurology service from  Aracelio Rodríguez Castellón  polyclinic, Cumanayagua. The sample consisted of 16 patients, by simple random probability sampling. The variables used were: age, sex, intensity, frequency, sleep disorders, adverse effects of acupuncture treatment, and effectiveness of the treatment. The treament was applied at intervals of 1.5-2 months, 10 sessions twice a week.

Results: 75 % of the patients with migraine headaches are women, 62,5 % present pain of moderate intensity, 50 % of the cases studied responded excellently to acupuncture treatment.

Conclusions: acupuncture therapy shows effectiveness and safety in the complementary treatment of migraine headaches. Its rational use is an option that reinforces the therapeutic arsenal in the communities.
