Introduction
Neonatal conjunctivitis is an inflammation of the conjunctiva that appears during the first four weeks of life. Its management requires solid knowledge among health professionals.
Objective
To modify the level of knowledge about neonatal conjunctivitis in Medical Sciences students through an educational intervention.
Methods
A pre-experimental, before-and-after educational intervention study was conducted, with a single group and no control group. The universe consisted of 127 Medical Sciences students from throughout the country who participated in the course General Aspects of Neonatal Conjunctivitis, taught at the Assistantship Conference in January 2026. Of those enrolled, 115 met the inclusion criteria. The intervention consisted of a virtual, asynchronous, self-guided course with 24 hours of independent study, with materials distributed via WhatsApp. Adequate knowledge was considered when 5 of the 7 items were answered correctly. McNemar’s test for paired samples was used (significance p < 0.05).
Results
Students from Santiago de Cuba (n = 59; 51.3%) and from the Medicine program (n = 68; 59.1%) predominated. Before the course, inadequate knowledge predominated in all dimensions (definition and etiology; differential diagnoses and complications; prophylactic and therapeutic treatment). After the course, a statistically significant increase in adequate knowledge was observed. The overall change was significant according to McNemar’s test (p < 0.001).
Conclusions
The educational intervention was associated with a notable and statistically significant increase in the level of theoretical knowledge about neonatal conjunctivitis.
