Introduction: in some biochemical variables between individuals with normal blood glucose, risk and diabetes, caused by alterations in lipid metabolism, resulting in risk of atherosclerosis; Therefore, it is necessary to show new evidence.
Objective: to determine the relationship between some biochemical variables with glycemic figures in individuals of the Cienfuegos municipality, in the year 2010.
Methods: correlational cross-sectional descriptive study. The sample consisted of 925 individuals. The variables were: glycemia, total cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL cholesterol, non HDL cholesterol / HDL cholesterol ratio; In addition to socio-demographic variables. Nonparametric statistical tests were applied to assess the correlation between fasting blood glucose and biochemical variables, with a significance of 95%.
Results: there was a predominance of white skin color and female sex, and those over 35 represented the highest percentage of the sample. Patients with glycemia of risk and diabetics presented an increase in the levels of total cholesterol and triacylglycerides above normal, in addition to a decrease in HDL cholesterol in relation to individuals with normal glycemia.
Conclusions: there is a positive correlation between the concentration of glucose and triacylglycerides and total blood cholesterol, which explains the biochemical imbalances in patients with risk and pathological glycemia. In diabetic patients, the levels of total cholesterol and triacylglycerides are increased above normal, and the protective factor generated by HDL is affected by decreasing their concentrations.
