Introduction: coronaviruses, the cause of the infectious disease officially named by the World Health Organization (WHO) as Covid-19, do not always remain confined to the respiratory tract, under certain conditions they can invade the central nervous system and cause neurological pathologies.
Objective: systematize essential content related to neurological diseases that occur in patients with coronavirus-2 infection.
Method: the scientific and medical community constantly publish their observations on this topic, a dynamic process with abundant information, for this reason a thorough review of the subject is carried out in bibliographic databases, such as Pubmed / Medline, Science Direct and SciELO, reached from Guantánamo Medical Sciences University.
Development: the information collected was structured into aspects related to the history of the disease, epidemiology and transmission routes of the coronovarirus, structure and replication of SARS-CoV-2, pathogenic mechanisms, and neurological alterations associated with COVID-19.
Conclusions: the neurological repercussions of COVID-19 are well defined, however, future research should clarify whether the pathogenic mechanisms are related to specific individual factors of the host, or if they are due to factors associated with neurovirulence and neurotropism of SARS-CoV- 2.Downloads
