Abstract

Introduction: breast cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer-related morbidity and mortality among women. In recent years, Natural and Traditional Medicine (NTM) has been incorporated as a complement to conventional treatment, with the aim of alleviating adverse reactions and improving patients’ overall well-being.
Objective: to describe the modalities of Natural and Traditional Medicine used and the clinical outcomes reported by breast cancer patients treated at the Conrado Benítez García Oncology Hospital, Santiago de Cuba. 2019-2020.
Method: an observational, descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted at the Conrado Benítez García Oncology Hospital, Santiago de Cuba, between November 2019 and December 2020. The sample consisted of 123 breast cancer patients selected through intentional non-probabilistic sampling. Descriptive statistics were used.
Results: stages II (47.1 %) and III (42.3 %) predominated. Homeopathy was mainly used after radiotherapy (48.42 %) and surgery (38.42 %), while nutritional counseling predominated during chemotherapy (35.62 %). Nutritional counseling was most frequently used for nausea and vomiting (86.2 %), homeopathy for immunosuppression (70.0 %), and nutritional counseling for anemia (74.0 %). Acupuncture was used in hypertensive patients (75.57 %), and anxiety was treated with auriculotherapy (53.44 %) and floral therapy (46.56 %). The use of NTM was satisfactory in 70.7 % of patients.
Conclusions: Natural and Traditional Medicine modalities were used as a complement to conventional treatment, mainly for the management of physical and psychological adverse reactions, with high acceptance and a favorable perception among patients.
