Development of communication skills for an effective relationship with the patient

Abstract

Introduction: to achieve the objectives proposed by Cuban Medical Education, the development of communication skills of expression, observation and empathy constitutes a challenge for the improvement of the doctor-patient relationship of the internal medicine resident. 

Objective: design a professionalization strategy for the development of communication skills in the doctor-patient relationship of the internal medicine resident of the “Joaquín Albarrán Domínguez” Clinical Surgical Teaching Hospital.

Method: an intervention and development study was carried out, with a pre-experimental design and a mixed perspective, which involved a process of collection, analysis and linking of quantitative and qualitative data, based on the General Dialectical Materialist method and the methods of scientific research at the theoretical, empirical and mathematical level that allowed us to assert the problems and potentialities from the variable and dimensions. 

Results: this result offers a reference from a theoretical-practical point of view that allows the development of communication skills in the medical-patient relationship in the clinical area, by promoting initiative, originality and creativity in the face of communication problems as well as their possible solutions during the professional practice of the internal medicine resident. 

Conclusions: the theoretical and empirical verification in the implementation of the professionalization strategy to develop communication skills made it possible to reveal that it is a necessary and feasible way, which allows achieving an adequate doctor-patient relationship in the communication process, becoming an option for the improvement of professional performance in the medical practice of the internal medicine resident.
