Introduction: sports in people over 60 years of age have a positive impact on the lifestyle and general well-being of these patients.
Objective: describe aspects related to obesity in the elderly and the effects of physical exercise in this population group.
Method: a review was carried out on the characteristics of obese elderly people and physical exercise to improve their quality of life. Articles published in the last five years in the main databases were consulted, selecting 33 articles from the last 5 years to carry out this work.
Results: there are different types of obesity and it has a multifactorial etiology, it is related to many pathologies, being a risk factor for the most part. Physical capacity declines with age and the decline is most pronounced in sedentary adults with sarcopenic obesity. Treatment is based, first, on lifestyle interventions and community prevention actions. There are four main types of exercises and each one is different, but practicing them all will provide the most benefit to the obese senior.
Conclusions: regular physical activity can improve the health of older adults, especially if they suffer from chronic diseases or have certain risks for the development of obesity. It offers physical, mental, social and economic benefits to the obese elderly.Downloads
