Abstract

Introduction: The prescription of drugs in dentistry clinical practice constitutes a valuable therapeutic tool in the treatment of disorders of the orofacial complex. Odontogenic facial cellulitis is one of the most common emergencies in pediatric patients, which requires a reasonable prescription for its treatment.

Objective: To identify the medications prescribed in pediatric patients with odontogenic facial cellulitis.

Methodological Design: An observational, descriptive, cross-sectional study was carried out at the Hospital Infantil Sur Dr. Antonio María Béguez César, Santiago de Cuba province, from September, 2015 to December, 2018. A total of 111 drug prescriptions were evaluated and the variables were: age, sex, prescribed drug, pharmacological group, category of drug prescription, individualization of treatment and drug combination. Descriptive statistics was applied.

Results: The male sex and the age group between 7-12 years prevailed among those affected. Cefazolin was the most widely used antimicrobial in patients, and dipyrone was the analgesic used. There was greater use of category B drugs.

Conclusions: There was an irrational prescription of medications when treating these patients, due to the fact that alternative and non-elective medications were prescribed to treat the condition.
