Dear Editor:

Childhood cancer represents a challenge for public health, scientific research, and comprehensive care for patients and their families. Paediatric oncology is a medical speciality that deals with the diagnosis and treatment of malignant tumours in children, it is estimated that about 300,000 new cases of childhood cancer are diagnosed each year in the world, and that around 80,000 children die from this cause.1

For this reason, it is of vital importance to hold the First Virtual National Student Scientific Conference on Pediatric Oncology OncoSan 2024, organized by the University Student Federation (FEU) of the Medical Sciences Branch "Julio Trigo López", the FEU Projects "Shared Smiles " and "Almas" of the University of Medical Sciences of Santiago de Cuba and the Student Scientific Group of Cancer Studies of the Medical Sciences Branch "Julio Trigo López", through the platform of the Virtual Health Convention Center (CENCOMED) https://oncosan2024.sld.cu/

The main objectives of this conference are to exchange and deepen theoretical and practical knowledge related to pediatric cancer; encourage scientific research based on Pediatric Oncology from a student point of view and encourage the dissemination of scientific results of the student body through scientific publication where the UNIMED Student Scientific Magazine is used as its main tool. In addition to promoting the exchange of knowledge, experiences and advances in the field of pediatric oncology among students of medicine, nursing, psychology and other related disciplines, as well as promoting interest in this area of medicine and stimulating scientific and research vocation.

The completion of OncoSan 2024 is a crucial milestone in the advancement of research and knowledge in the field of pediatric oncology. This event represents a unique opportunity for medical students, young researchers and health professionals to come together to share knowledge, experiences and discoveries in a collaborative and enriching environment.2

Pediatric oncology is a discipline that requires a multidisciplinary approach and constant updating of scientific and technological advances. OncoSan 2024 provides the perfect platform for participants to learn about the latest advances in the diagnosis, treatment and care of pediatric cancer patients.2

In addition, this event is an opportunity to promote the scientific vocation among students of medicine and other health-related disciplines. Participation in academic activities such as this scientific conference can inspire young people to dedicate themselves to research and contribute to the advancement of knowledge in the field of pediatric oncology.

The importance of this day not only lies in scientific updating, but also in raising awareness about the problem of childhood cancer. It is essential to raise awareness in society about the importance of early detection, access to appropriate treatments and comprehensive support for children and their families facing this disease.

The First Virtual National Student Scientific Conference on Pediatric Oncology OncoSan 2024 is a unique opportunity to get closer to the world of pediatric oncology, a specialty that requires committed, trained and human professionals, who can provide comprehensive and quality care to children and girls with cancer and their families. It is a highly relevant event that promotes the exchange of knowledge, stimulates the scientific vocation and contributes to raising awareness about the reality of childhood cancer. Its completion is a significant step on the path to improving the approach to this disease and the well-being of affected children and will undoubtedly contribute to the scientific and social development of the country.
